Satellite imagery from July 2026 shows China has completed the first construction phase at Antelope Reef in the disputed Paracel Islands, producing a reclaimed island roughly 6 km long, a 680-meter wharf, a helicopter pad, and what analysts describe as the beginning of runway excavation. Analysts at AMTI estimate approximately 1,490 acres of reclaimed land, which would make Antelope Reef comparable in size to Mischief Reef, though AMTI notes Beijing's plans for further development remain uncertain. China describes the project as serving civilian purposes including weather forecasting and maritime search and rescue, while Vietnam has formally declared any foreign construction there illegal.

During his August 19–20 Seoul visit, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi publicly urged South Korea to pursue strategic autonomy and refrain from taking sides between Beijing and Washington, language conveyed through Chinese state media rather than a joint statement. Wang also called on the United States to abandon its hostile policy toward North Korea, framing Washington as the source of peninsula tensions. No South Korean government readout directly responding to Wang's specific wording was located, leaving the official Seoul reaction to that framing incomplete.
