ISM Manufacturing PMI Hit 55.6 in July While 62% of Respondent Comments Were Negative
The ISM Manufacturing PMI rose to 55.6% in July 2026, its highest reading since May 2022, with 15 of 18 industries expanding and employment entering growth for the first time in 33 months. Despite those headline gains, the Prices Paid index remained at 71.1% for a sixth consecutive month above 70%, and 62% of respondent comments were negative, with pricing volatility cited in 57% of negative remarks and the Iran conflict in 43%. A separate S&P Global survey held steady at 53.9% for July but flagged slowing production and order growth, pointing to different momentum signals from the same month.
