EU Agrees €115 Million Defence SME Programme Funded Entirely by Reallocation from Existing Budgets
The EU Council and Parliament provisionally agreed on 15 July 2026 to create AGILE, a €115 million grant programme targeting SMEs developing disruptive defence technologies, with a four-month time-to-grant target and up to 100% cost coverage. The entire budget comes from internal reallocations within the current 2021–2027 spending framework, drawing from IRIS², the European Defence Fund, EDIP, and the Galileo and Copernicus space programmes rather than new appropriations. The programme is expected to become operational in early 2027, though the first call date, individual grant sizes, and thematic priorities remain unconfirmed pending a Commission implementing work programme.
