Hong Kong Court Sentences Alliance Leaders Up to Seven Years Three Months for Subversion
Hong Kong's Court of First Instance convicted the Hong Kong Alliance and three of its leaders of incitement to subversion under the National Security Law, handing down sentences of up to seven years and three months on 11 September 2026. China's Foreign Ministry Office in Hong Kong rejected subsequent criticism from the United Kingdom and the European Union, both of which argued the prosecution undermined freedoms protected under the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration. Lee Cheuk-yan and Chow Hang-tung have indicated plans to appeal, though no formal notice of appeal has been filed.
