NY Fed Survey Puts Unemployment Fear at 44.4 Percent Highest Since April 2020
The New York Fed's August 2026 Survey of Consumer Expectations found that consumers' mean probability of higher unemployment one year ahead rose to 44.4%, its highest reading since April 2020, while one-year inflation expectations held unchanged at 3.6% and five-year expectations stayed at 3.0%. Household financial conditions also weakened, with 32.6% of respondents expecting their finances to worsen over the next year, up from 30.3% in July, and the probability of missing a minimum debt payment rising to 13.2%. The divergence between stable but above-target inflation expectations and deteriorating labor market and household financial sentiment arrives directly ahead of the FOMC's September 15–16 meeting, where three regional Fed presidents have already dissented or called for higher rates.
