Automotive Industry Faces Near-Term Skills Gap: CAR Research
A new Center for Automotive Research study of 67 Michigan automotive businesses found 72 percent expect moderate-to-significant skills gaps within one to three years, with dealerships and service operations facing the steepest shortfalls. The gaps cluster around EV and battery technicians, automation and robotics, and digital skills — driven by the fact that 94 percent of new automaker jobs announced in Michigan since 2021 are tied to electrification. Employers are leaning heavily on on-the-job training to respond, but the research argues that a single statewide solution won't work because each supply-chain segment faces a distinct talent problem.
