Afghanistan War Commission Final Report Deadline Moves to August 2027
Bipartisan leaders of relevant House and Senate committees approved a one-year extension for the Afghanistan War Commission on August 27, 2026, using an existing statutory mechanism in the commission's 2021 authorizing legislation rather than passing new law. The commission's final report on America's 20-year war in Afghanistan is now due in August 2027, pushed back from the original August 2026 deadline to allow completion of interviews, two planned 2026 hearings, and outstanding document requests from the Pentagon, State Department, and intelligence community. As of the commission's August 2025 interim report, more than 160 on-the-record interviews had been conducted, with significant classified records and eight of nine ODNI briefing requests still outstanding.
