USDA Issues Disaster Declaration for 2026 Freeze Events
A late-April 2026 freeze that hit after fruit trees had already bloomed wiped out up to 99% of peach crops and 94% of apple crops across New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, prompting USDA Secretarial disaster declarations that open FSA emergency loans, SBA disaster loans, and other assistance to producers in dozens of counties across six states. Deadlines to apply run from January through February 2027, but farmers should note that the widely-discussed Supplemental Disaster Relief Program is explicitly restricted to 2023-2024 losses and cannot be used for 2026 freeze damage. New Jersey alone faces an estimated $300 million in losses, with no consolidated multi-state total yet compiled.
